Making summer memories!

TALES

I was driving home, and saw an unusual sight under the historical Chambers Railway Bridge.

Swimming in the cold river were, four boys and one dog, reminiscent of Huckleberry Fin and his friends.

I parked the car, walked over, and everyone stopped splashing long enough to tell me the story of their happy, wet, dog.

Charlie was rescued from a dog pound in California, and was transplanted to our beautiful town, with his new family.

His original name was Charlie Brown, so Tanis and John's family decided to keep it, with an added twist!

He has officially earned the title, Charlie Brown the Clown!

Brandi, their mother says, "We wanted to adopt an older dog, because puppies are a lot of work.

And sadly, you can always find many good-older dogs, who need homes.  We were as lucky to find Charlie, as he was us."

Charlie, is a 6 year old, Golden Labrador, possibly Chow mix.  He will shamelessly run all day, for any ball, as long as he can find someone to throw them for him!

If there is no one around, he has two options!

First, he tosses the ball in the air, then chases it himself.

And secondly, if someone is sitting close by, he tosses the ball directly into their laps!

If Charlie is left alone, playing with a tennis ball, the ball often ends up flat as a green pancake.

Tanis, John, and their sister, Sabrina, love Charlie, he is a great companion, and protector, for their family.

Charlie's alertness lets the family know, when someone is coming up their driveway.

Brandi's advice, "Our family believes that pet guardians should give their dogs a lot of love, and if you forget, the dogs often remind you...as does Charlie us."

TIPS

Brandi's pet tip, "We advocate keeping dogs on a leash, and that pet guardians should pick up after their dogs.

Our dog is friendly, many people's dogs are, but you never know what they will react to, or when, so taking the extra precaution, is both a wise and safe measure."

Vet TIPS

Oregon Veterinary Medial Association suggests, "Avoid over exerting your pet during exercise and play.

Use caution when exercising your pet outside on hot and/or humid days.  It's best to take your dog out for exercise in the early morning or late afternoon.

The heat of the pavement at midday can blister your dog's pads.

Always provide plenty of clean, cool water before and after exercise to avoid dehydration.

But don't let your pet eat or drink too much before or after exercising.  This can lead to the painful and often fatal condition called gastric torsion, or "bloat."

Avoid this condition by not feeding your dog for at least two yours before or after it exercises."
