Best Buddies TALES
Mike and Kathy, along with their rambunctious pack of dogs, enjoy their two hour walks in the woods.
Snoopy, a twelve year old Spaniel mix, rescued from Greenhill Humane Society, is still energetic, and loves the long walks.
He is famous for chasing opossums, until they play dead. And, Snoopy is smarter than those that litter our beautiful area, he barks at the sight of trash!
Bene is a perfect mix of Fox Hound and German Shepherd. He loves to play soccer, whether it is with a ball, or the tiniest pine cone, discovered on the trail.
Kathy says, "Bene is so fast, that it's hard to kick anything past him. We never taught him how to play soccer, he started it all."
"Also, no one can run next to Bene long enough, or fast enough, to give him the exercise he needs. He comes from a hunting breed, which runs non-stop, for five hours at a time! He gets extra exercise on our walks, because we toss a ball for him to fetch, and return. The walks in the woods are good for him, big dogs need a safe place to run off leash."
"He is friendly with everyone, and the smartest dog we've had."
Buster was rescued from strangers at a gas station, who boldly announced, they were on their way to the shelter with him.
Buster was so abused, that Kathy and Mike continue working hard on building his self confidence.
Mike excitedly said, "After a year and a half, we were thrilled, when Buster finally learned how to play with a ball! Our other two dogs taught him how to act like a dog, and play. I'm glad Kathy rescued him, because we all love him. Whatever abuse he suffered, no one deserves."
The three dogs, enjoy their time together in the fenced back yard, sleeping and playing, while their guardians are at work. At quitting time, the dogs can be seen, staring down the empty driveway, waiting for Kathy and Mike's return...and their dinner! TIPS Kathy says, "If you work all day, consider adopting a second dog, rather than leaving one alone. They appreciate each other's company. When campgrounds are closed, they are a great place to run your dogs. Also, logging roads, such as Weyerhaeuser Road, past the park at Cottage Grove Lake, in the evenings, or on the weekend, when the logging trucks are not running, are great walking areas.
When it's too hot for walks, we drive to "swimming holes," on Sharps Creek, Bryce Creek, or Big River. We can all wade, swim, cool off and the dogs enjoy the forest scents.
Dogs need a firm assertive leader, who remains calm, at all times. A great way to calm a dog; rub their chest, very softly speak to them, repeat their name, and tell them that they are a good dog."

Kathy says, "Train your dogs to go in one place. If you keep it clean, they won't go elsewhere. And, don't use plastic bags to collect doggy doo in, as the bags do not break down in landfills. Biodegradable bags are easy to find on the internet. Always, clean up your dogs 'gifts' before mowing, as they can clog up the lawnmower."
