TALES Stefanie, who works at Safeway, discovered an abandoned black and white kitten under a house. A friend knew the previous owners and was aware that they had first abused the kitten, by shaking it, and then left it behind when they moved. Stefanie says, "When I called out to the tiny-thin kitten, she came directly to me. It was obvious, she was starving. I carried her to the truck, and she crawled into the backseat and curled up next to Kathleen's big dog Bear." (Kind-hearted Bear was mentioned in last week's Tips 'n' Tales, on how he loves cats and adopted his own kitten.) Dog Rescues & Adopts A Kitten: http://www.angelscribe.com/tnt_060408.html Choosing a name for the kitten was easy. It had a sassy personality, and was appropriately named Sassie. Stefanie adds, "Sassie displays the long lasting results from the abuse she suffered. People need to know that pets are susceptible to shaking, just as babies are. We still love her, because she loves us and makes our family laugh. Sassie also loves Bear, our 118 pound dog, and follows him out the dog door. When I come home from work, Sassie chases me around the house, insisting I pet her. It is rewarding to know she totally adores and appreciates me. Sassie has the oddest habit, that drives my fiancé wild! After Jarrod has a shower, and sits on the bed, she is so intrigued with his wet hair, that she climbs up his back, and licks his hair. No one can figure out why, possibly Sassie thinks she is grooming Jarrod. Sassie enjoys her little Christmas red and green dog ball. She lies on her back, with the ball between her front paws, and proceeds to kill it with her back feet. Stefanie adds, "We are confused as to why anyone would mistreat a kitten, and then abandon it. This cat did not deserve it. No pet does. And we are so fortunate to have her, because she brings us joy, laughter and has taught us compassion." TIPS Statistics indicate, 'The child who reads succeeds.' Tips 'n' Tales offers the purrfect opportunity encouraging children to read newspaper articles. The stories are entertaining, and teach children new ideas for caring for the pets they love. Debbie and Chuck, owners of Cottage Grove's Old Mill Farm Store, on South River Road, suggest, "Three days prior to hot weather, take your personal water bottles, fill with water and place in the freezer. These make wonderful coolers to add to your critters' cages or under the bedding of larger pets. Also, peal the label off the bottle, prior to placing in their cages, so they wont eat it." Oregon Veterinary Medial Association suggests, "Outdoor chemicals pose a potential risk to your pets. If you use herbicides or insecticides, do not allow your pets in the yard while applying these products and keep them out of the yard for 3-4 days after application. Pets who walk on treated surfaces then lick their paws and can be poisoned. Also, slug, snail bait and rodent poison are toxic. Pets should be kept away from them at all times." "Seek immediate medical treatment for your pet if you suspect poisoning. Signs are drooling, staggering, stumbling, acting confused or disoriented." Dr. Lisa Piccioni, DVM, Certified in Pet Chiropractic by the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association: www.PawsitiveMotion.com Janetta Overholser, President of Humane Society of Cottage Society (HSCG) says, "Animal abandonment is against the law, as well as being terribly cruel and inhumane. It is not the pets' fault they are unwanted. Spay/neuter your pets, so you do not have to deal with unwanted kittens and puppies, and neither will your neighbors. Do not dump/throw-away/abandon/discard living creatures, whose only crime is being born, because someone did not do the responsible thing and have their pet-parents altered. If you find a litter, and are unable to care for them, contact someone. There is help available. Once your cats/dogs are altered, you will not have to deal with cat fights, abscesses, howling and yowling, or your pet trying to get out or run away, or worse-- run over, along with other possible tragedies. Spay and neuter. It is a win/win solution! HSCG has a Low-Income Spay/Neuter Assistance Program, $20 off S/N coupons, half-price coupons on occasion -- all to help with the cost of spay/neuter so it is affordable. Come to: This-and-That Corner, 33 N. 8th Street, for forms, coupons, and information. Contact Greenhill Humane Society in Eugene, for their foster pet program." Nate Traylor, Community Relations Coordinator of Greenhill suggests, "Before surrendering an animal to the pound or a Humane Society, seriously consider the impact on your pet. Some facilities are bright and clean and have a top-notch staff that will care for your pet, but that won't replace the feelings of confusion and rejection your animal will experience after being surrendered. Please relinquish your animal only as a last resort." Pet Adoptions ![]() Nymbus, the Kitty who swims
