![]() Photo by Mary Ellen "Angel Scribe"© Barbara and Gary, with Jenny their rescued 12 ½ year old, black Lab. TALES Jenny's puppy hood was miserable. Her first family had a new baby and gave her to a second family. At the second family's home they kept her tied up all the time.
Because she was young, it was her nature to run, jump and play, and out of confusion and frustration she barked in protest to be free. Her guardians did not like hearing her, so they handed her to a third family. For some unknown reason, the third family decided to shoot Jenny. Why they did not consider a Humane Society shelter as an option, is unthinkable. Barbara and Gary love dogs, so as soon as they heard what was to befall Jenny, they immediately rescued her, and became her fourth family at the age of one. Barbara said, "At the time, we had another dog, Lady, who was a Welsh Corgi. Lady and Jenny loved each other and ran non-stop in circles to see who would win. Lady, whose legs were considerably shorter always lost, so one day, she cut the circle in half and arrived back to us first." Barbara laughed, "It was so funny watching Lady's thought process. We felt like giving Lady a first place blue ribbon!" Barbara marvels at the fine tuned hearing dogs have. "When we whisper, barely audible, the word 'squirrel' Jenny gets so excited, her eyes light up, and you know she understands perfectly." On one wild squirrel chase, Jenny hurt her hip. Coupled with her age, she now chases squirrels part time and but mostly ambles around inspecting Barbara and Gary's acreage. Barbara recently learned that animals benefit from chiropractic care, and took Jenny to a local pet chiropractor. One of Barbara's funniest memories of Jenny is, "When she would run through tall grass. She would stop and attack the grass, chomping and biting at it, fast, some what like a cow. Before we could figure out what she was up to, she turned and looked up at us with a big happy grin, and her mouth was full of grass hanging out at wild angles. Saving Jenny was a blessing for all of us, she is a good dog and has only given us joy. She is so sweet, her gentle eyes tell us that she loves us too. We are as lucky to have her, as she is us, and with her advancing age, every day is precious."

Gary and Barbara loving Jenny, and Jenny loving it! TIPS Barbara recommends, "Lots of love and attention, and the rewards are companionship and laughter."
Janetta Overholser, President of Humane Society of Cottage Society recommends, "Turn unwanted pets into a shelter, so someone else can enjoy them. Inside Cottage Grove city limits; report animal abuse/cruelty to the police, outside city, to LCARA, now LCAS (Lane County Animal Services.)
To keep your Humane Shelters open, remember that they have to pay staff salaries, buy thousands of pounds of pet food and kitty litter, medicine, etc. Donations, grants, receiving fees, and adoption fees are needed to keep them in operation."
