Best Friends, Naomi, Britt & Piper,
a four year old Pembroke Welsh Corgi
TALES
Two years ago, while visiting friends in another state, Britt's father, who knew she always wanted a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, discovered one at a shelter.
Britt recalls, "I was a teenager, a college student and already had the responsibility of two horses. I didn't need a dog. But, thought, what could it hurt to look?"
Britt saw Piper on a Friday, huddled in the back of a kennel. Piper was tiny, malnourished, and had an advanced eye infection.
Britt says, "Because I did not need a dog, I turned and left for the drive home. Piper's sad eyes followed me. I couldn't sleep that night, because I knew that on Monday, she would be euthanized."
Britt retraced the 300 miles back to the shelter, and rescued Piper.
Britt took her to a veterinarian. Piper was vaccinated, de-wormed, microchiped, and sent to an eye specialist, who diagnosed her with K.C.S., (a painful dry eye condition, where eyes don't produce tears.)"
Piper should have weighed twenty pounds, yet barely weighed twelve, and was pregnant.
Knowing her eye condition could be genetic, and given Piper's health, Britt did the responsible thing, and had Piper spayed. Piper may still go blind, even with the best medical care.
Britt says, "It breaks my heart. She is a bright eyed, four legged angel, and for what she has given me, I'd be honored to be her "eyes."
"The 'Princess' charm on her collar says it all," laughs Britt, when describing her now pampered pooch.
Piper works, at Forest Valley Veterinary Clinic, where Britt, is a Veterinary Technician.
Piper takes her job seriously. She greets clients, is fully trained in obedience, and her herding instincts are beneficial to Dr. Pelton and Britt, as she herds livestock on farm calls.
Piper has a special gift. When, Naomi, Britt's coworker became ill, Britt says, "I made Naomi dinner, while Piper lay beside her.
When it was time to go, I had to pull Piper away from Naomi. Piper fought me, the entire way to the car, struggling to get loose from my arms and back to Naomi.
Later that night, Naomi's parents rushed her to the Emergency Room, where she was given IV Fluids for severe dehydration.
Piper knew all along, that Naomi was seriously ill."
Piper will soon be in the PAAWS program, where she can use her natural service dog personality, to help others.

Britt is also interested in R.E.A.D. A program for children with reading difficulties, who read aloud to pets.
Britt says; "Adopting a shelter dog is rewarding. Piper is the best dog I've ever had, she is giving in every way possible. I saved her life, and in return she is my life, she truly is a gift."
TIPS
Britt recommends these health tips for new pets, "Take your pet to a veterinarian; they need vaccinations, microchiping, de-worming, and neutering or spaying immediately.
The world is flooded with unwanted dogs and cats. It is the responsibility of all pet owners, who have rescued their pet, to prevent that pet from adding, to the already over crowded world of pet population.)
Your pet, as young as five months, will come into heat and produce offspring.
Many people want to show their children the miracle of birth, through their pets. Please rent a birth video.
The reality, and the numbers of animals euthanized in animal shelters is sobering.
You can save other generations of animals, from the fate that faced Piper, and many other unwanted pets.
Veterinary Clinics and the Humane Society reinforce the benefits of altering your pets." Pet Adoption info: www.PetFinder.org ![]() Swimming Cats on TV
